eToro: impressions, doubts and (ignored) lessons from copy trading

(no promotional content, no affiliate links)
Hi,
exactly four years ago, I started copying eToro investors / traders that I selected using the broker's built-in search engine (profitable in last two years, already being copied by others), followed by manual filtering, to take into account fluctuations in yearly returns, composition of their portfolios etc. With that, I got a list of 10 people whom I started to copy on a demo account:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1u52f0XHfr-LauIscKcFDYF0yGTTUr6VY/view?usp=sharing
In the screenshot you can see that in case of the first two of them the amount invested was $10,000, while for the rest it was just $100. This is because I started copying the first two a couple of weeks earlier; eventually I changed this into $100 the same day I made the screenshot and this is when my calculations start - so this thing is irrelevant, I just cannot travel in time to make another screenshot.
What I did after that?
Well, within the next six weeks my profits oscillated between -$11 and +$9.50 (the biggest profit was on Nov 9, a day after US presidential elections). I found this "boring" and discontinued experimenting with copy trading.
Today I looked back at those ten traders. Here is what I found. Firstly, seven of them are not with eToro anymore; investorNo1, Simple-Stock-Mkt, tradingrelax, 4exPirate, primit, Gallojack, xjurokx. The other three traders are:
My observations and thoughts are as follows:
  1. Seven out of ten traders are not with eToro anymore, which makes me wonder why. I have no proof but my guess is they simply performed poorly, lost their copiers and closed their accounts. This is already alarming but what if they opened another account? Or, even worse, multiple accounts? They could be investing small money and try different risky approaches, hoping that at least one account will turn out profitable in the long turn, attracting potential copiers. (I'm not claiming that those 7 particular traders did this, it's just my general suspicion regarding some of eToro traders)
  2. I'm unable to calculate what would be my profit if I never stopped copying them, because I cannot check at what day and with what profit those seven traders left eToro. I'm guessing this would be an immense loss. On the other hand, considering the three traders who are still with eToro, I would lose more than a quarter of my assets!
What now?
I must be a quite adventurous person or at least an incorrigible optimist, because a month ago (exactly on Aug 26th) I started copying three traders with real money. Here is who they are.
rubymza (Heloise Greeff)

OlivierDanvel (Olivier Jean Andre Danvel)

rayvahey (Raymond Noel Vahey)
What was my strategy to hand-pick these particular traders? First I did some basic scanning using eToro's built-in search engine. The most important filter was that the trader was profitable within the last two years: unfortunately, eToro does not allow to reach details of earlier performance automatically. To know how the trader performed before 2019, I had to look at stats in the profile of each of them. I was also taking into account how often they trade (to avoid those who do only a couple of trades yearly), whether they were trading recently and whether they write posts regularly in their feed. With this, I got a list of fifteen candidates to copy:
As you already know, I finally chose three of them. Rubymza seemed to be the most trustworthy stock trader, based on profits, posts feed and regular trading, among other things. Regarding OlivierDanvel, his uniqueness is the ability to record continuous profits with the Forex market. Finally, with rayvahey I wanted to increase my exposure to the commodities market.
Wish me good luck!
Michael

Is it a bad idea to get into Forex for GBP/USD now?

It's still at 1.366 or so, and it's likely going to go back up eventually. Maybe drop again if Scotland leaves, but eventually it'll probably wind up back at 1.5 I figure.
Bad idea if you're a newbie? Any experienced Forex traders care to chime in with what their plans are because of Brexit?

Forex Newbie Disappointed

Hello Everyone,
I am a new graduate of babypips, beginning my forex journey HOWEVER I have run into a brick wall. Even though I entered a short on USD/JPY @ 114.3035 as a carry trade somehow I missed out on understanding that the quotes were 20 min delayed (learning this from an equity short I was in) and that I was auto exited on NY mkt close and re entered on NY open for my USD/JPY short position....What? It would have been an very profitable trade and is now showing as a loss. How am I to use this platform other than just back testing. I trade equities, options, futures and forex and am looking for a platform that offers all four with a paper trade acct. One that offers EXT hrs, real time quotes and does not automatically close and reopen my FOREX positions based on the closing of the NY Mkt. I am Mac based but that is not the end of the road, if necessary I can work on a Windows platform. Am I misunderstanding something, I expect a charge on a carry trade but not an exit unless I got a margin call. If anyone can offer suggestions I can look @, I am thanking you all in advance. I can't trade with real cash until I have proven ability which would be determined in a demo. Again many thks.

Newbie here and I need help

Hi, so I opened an account with TD Ameritrade to trade stocks with last year and ended up getting side tracked with other things (college). I decided this month to look back into trading and really try to educate myself and truly understand whats going on rather than just looking at a chart and guessing, and also try other things besides stocks. So for the past two weeks I've been attempting to trade forex with the paper money account TD provides.
So, today I was doing pretty okay. I went long on EUGBP and over the course of 2 hours made $217 with my fake money. I was pretty happy. Then I proceed to lose $500 when I went long on EUUSD and five minutes later it hit its daily high and plummeted after that. After that knife in the my gut, I decided to take a break and go do some things, come back in a more stable state of mind. For the last hour I've been trying to pull some money out of the market here and there. I made a few bucks back, but then I took a loss that really pissed me off. I'm using TD's ThinkOrSwim platform to trade with and I must be missing something or don't understand something. I analyzed my charts for about 5 minutes and drew my trend lines and marked important price points. I was looking for the EUUSD to go long after it took a quick dive and made a double bottom. I set a BUY LMT order at 1.1180 and set my stop loss for 10 pips less and 50% take profits for 20 pips and the rest take profit at 50 pips above my entry. I left it to do its thing and I come back around 20 minutes later to see that the price is now 5 pips past my BUY LMT order and for some reason I haven't entered yet even though I set the order up. I don't seem to have this problem when I set up an order to short though.
I do have an issue with shorting and I guess I just don't understand what I'm doing. I analyzed my charts and was going to short EUGBP. I entered at 0.7337 and watched it drop to almost 0.7330. I was expecting a nice little profit when I looked at the P/L Open to see that I was negative almost $70. I thought if you short it you make money when the pair goes down in price? I've also had the opposite happen when going long on quick trades (15 min or less) where the price is now well above my entry but I'm in the negative on my P/L open.
I'm just really confused now and need some help, both with what types of orders to use and when to use them, and also with ThinkOrSwim itself. I thought if I wanted to go Long I should use a BUY LMT order as opposed to MKT order to know I'm not paying more than what I want to but when I set those BUY LMT orders up they aren't being executed.
ANY help or advice is appreciated, thanks.
